What’s Your Why?

So often in music, we start because of love. The way the piano feels under our fingers. Notes strung together on a guitar. Lyrics that move us back in time. It starts with love, but we eventually get caught up in the details - the technicality of how to play, the organization of when the next gig is, the logistics of practicing and scheduling. We know it’s still love, but we get stuck in the minutiae of producing the desired musical effect. We often forget to stop and check in with ourselves about why we started. Why music? Why did we opt in to such a demanding and passion-driven career? What do we want to give to the world? Are we reaching our goals?

Is it worth it?

When these big, existential questions pop up, they can feel overwhelming, especially if times are tough. When gigs are scarce and bills are piling up, it can be tempting to get a day job or opt out of music, trading the madness of creating art for security, scheduled breaks, and a matched 401k. But, chances are, that's not gonna fly. You were born to work in music. We need you to do this thing you were put on Earth to do. The world needs music, now more than ever. But, if you don’t establish your reasons for doing this at the beginning, you may find yourself getting tripped up when things get hard.

Facing rejection, performing to people who aren’t listening, or releasing content to an audience that isn't engaged can make even the most talented performer doubt their abilities. It's in times like these that it helps to tap into that personal reserve of strength - your values, your reason, your why. It’s in times like these that it helps to remember the love.

When your reasons for creating are clear, you become aligned with the art you make. Finding an audience and marketing to them becomes easier. Projects that previously seemed out of reach become available. Everything feels a little lighter. We believe finding this alignment is essential, and uncovering it requires some deep introspection.

I believe you have a unique and important gift to give to the world. Your life experiences, your skills, your interpretation of art, and the community you've built around yourself can inspire change and connect people. Your passion for music is an important part of your community and culture. Our community will help you uncover exactly how you can draw upon your natural skills, strengths, values, goals, and gifts, to be the best artist you can be. We will help you remember the love.
